I’ve been thinking about this for years now, but when Oprah recently talked about celebrity obsession, it inspired me to write this post. It’s interesting and scary how obsessed our society is with celebrities. So obsessed that a lot of people are living outside of their means so that they can emulate the grand lifestyle. We constantly want the newest [and usually expensive] EVERYTHING! Materialism is out of control. Just as an example, I remember when I was younger and only rich grownups carried Coach bags . . . now I see so many very young girls carrying them around.
And what’s up with the hundreds of new magazines popping up that have almost all the same content . . . about Hollywood, about sex, and the new ‘must-haves’.
Some of you might already know, but the coined term ‘reality tv’ is false – it’s not reality. It might be entertaining, but it’s rigged, scripted, and edited to what the producers want.
What’s my point? The media sure is doing an awesome job of helping us become unsatisfied with ourselves and our possessions . . . which in turn makes us more self-absorbed . . . which in turn brings less attention to things that really matter in life like giving, inner growth, true joy, etc.
I know I can’t change the media, but this world is in a lot of trouble if it keeps going further in the direction that it is. Whether we recognize it or not, media definitely has a massive influence on all of us. We need more of good movies, music videos, magazines, music, celebrity role models to saturate the world. More shows like good old Cosby Show where it’s clean yet highly entertaining.
There’s a motto out there that says ‘sex sells’. Don’t buy into it - if you know something contains immoral sex or anything not edifying for that matter, don’t watch it and don’t listen to it – don’t give them the ratings otherwise we’re helping them come up with more. Let’s stop polluting our mind and spirit. If you care, lift up a prayer for our media.

great post, grace. it’s amazing how much we are affected by the useless junk in the media. cosby show, full house, home improvement, growing pains.. haha those were good times.
this is awesome auntie~ celebrities make such an impact….
Grace, that’s a great point! We should lift up a prayer about the media and the effects on the people.
I so agree
thanks for sharing! and I miss shows like the cosby show and even the cartoons aren’t as good as they used to be :T
hahaha ew paris hilton.
this entry is bold.
wow. true that… good word soul sista!
dangit…i was seriously contemplating making an application video to MTV’s Real World. LOL…but I think you have just convicted me not to.
I think I watched the same Oprah show. Was it the one with the girl that had over 100 shoes and spent over $165,000 in clothes to maintain her obsession? That was sad…just real sad. When we get sucked into that stuff, we’re forgetting who we are and our identity in Christ. Shame, shame.
i love the cosby show! i don’t have a tv in my studio… it’s made the biggest difference ever! i do watch at the gym, but i limit it to that…
did you know it’s only $20,000 to build an orphanage in uganda, housing 8 orphans?… i think that’ll be my next goal…
what about carl winslow? if you like him, thats ok i think. but hope youre doing well grace!
Amen sista! Laura and I have decided to turn off the media and turn on our lives. That way we are totally satisfied with what we have, and need not more than our God and each other. We don’t even need an extravagant wedding, but we are planning for an extravagant marriage – not about $$, but about <3<3
29 more days! ~KOOP
AMEN Sista! That’s why I’m down here! Gotta break ground in Hollywood for Jesus!
you seem to always write about stuff exactly as i feel and want to say on xanga. i always get so worked up about these issues and when i think about writing all that’s on my mind, it takes me forever to draft it and edit. it’s like writing a paper. so i push it aside to do it “tomorrow.” when tomorrow comes, i have other issues i want to address… and when i share my thoughts [orally], people just think that i should relax and let them have fun. but oh man, if i get anywhere near what they do (ex: watching tv, wearing mascara, wearing a no-sleeve dress, etc.) boy, do they judge…”oooooh, smn!!!” man, i bet if i went to an NRB, they’d have a heart attack!
